NDP commemorates Indigenous Veterans Day

NDP Veterans Affairs critic Rachel Blaney and NDP Indigenous Services, Northern Affairs, and Crown-Indigenous Relations critic Lori Idlout made the following joint statement:

“On Indigenous Veterans Day, we honour and remember the brave Indigenous men and women who have served in the armed forces, contributing to the defence and protection of our country with unwavering courage and commitment. Their sacrifices, often made in the face of historical injustices and challenges, reflect a deep sense of duty and honour.

First Nations, Métis and Inuit veterans have served in conflicts around the world, yet their stories, too often overlooked, are integral to the history of military service. From the Cree-speaking Code Talkers in the First World War to the Second World War, Indigenous soldiers have fought with distinction, demonstrating strength and unwavering bravery.

Today, we acknowledge their invaluable contributions and sacrifices, as well as the unique cultural and spiritual connection many Indigenous veterans maintain with their communities. We also recognize the ongoing challenges they face as they return home, and we reaffirm our commitment to supporting them with the respect and care they deserve.

This day is an opportunity to reflect on the strength and perseverance of Indigenous peoples, to remember the sacrifices made, and to ensure that the legacy of Indigenous veterans is passed down to future generations. We thank them for their service, for their sacrifices, and for the example they set of pride and love for their communities.

Lest we forget.”
